8th International Workshop on Combinations of Intelligent Methods and Applications

in conjunction with the

30th International Conference on Tools with Artificial Intelligence
5-7 November 2018, Volos, Greece


The combination of different intelligent methods is a very active research area in Artificial Intelligence (AI). The aim is to create integrated or hybrid methods that benefit from each of their components. It is generally believed that complex problems can be easier solved with such integrated or hybrid methods. Some of the existing efforts combine what are called soft computing methods (fuzzy logic, neural networks and evolutionary algorithms) either among themselves or with more traditional AI technologies such as logic and rules. Another stream of efforts integrates case-based reasoning and machine learning with soft computing and traditional AI methods. Yet another integrates agent-based approaches with logic and non-symbolic approaches. Some of the combinations have been quite important and have been more extensively used, like neuro-symbolic methods, neuro-fuzzy methods and methods combining rule-based and case-based reasoning. However, there are other combinations that are still under investigation, such as those related to semantic web and deep learning as well as to swarm intelligence algorithms. In some cases, combinations are based on first principles, but in most cases, they are created in the context of specific applications.

The Workshop is intended to become annual forum for exchanging experience and ideas among researchers who are dealing with combining intelligent methods either based on first principles or in the context of specific applications. Topics of interest include (but not limited to) the following:

Paper Submission

We are interested in high quality research papers on the above or related topics. Interested authors are invited to submit original contributions to the workshop. The papers should not exceed 6 pages (following ICTAI guidelines: ).All contributions should be submitted in pdf format at easychair All papers will be refereed by at least two members of the program committee of the Workshop. Accepted papers will be presented at the Workshop sessions of the conference.


Proceedings of all accepted papers will be published in electronic form in the CEUR workshop proceedings database (an ISSN number will be given). The proceedings of the workshop will be index in CEUR database. The papers are availabe here.

Extended versions of the accepted papers, following the line of previous years workshops, will be published as some Springer series volume or other official way after the workshop.

We are in the process of editing a book on Combinations of Intelligence Methods, Publisher: Springer, Intelligent Systems Reference Library bookseries. You can find more information here.

Registration & Attendance

One of the authors of each accepted paper should register for the ICTAI Conference and present the work during the associated Workshop session at the conference. If none of the authors is registered, their paper will not be presented at the Workshop and will not be included in the workshop proceedings. Registration info are available here .

Camera Ready Submission

Please note that the papers will be indexed and uploaded on the CEUR database So, please, ensure that you follow the LNCS format at when preparing and uploading your final camera ready version of your submission. The template for formatting your paper according to LNCS can be found at . You also need to fill in and upload the following copyright transfer form: In the "Workshop/Conference/Book:" field you should put "8th International Workshop on Combinations of Intelligent Methods and Applications (CIMA 2018)" and in the field "... (hereinafter the editors/publishers):" you should write: "Ioannis Hatzilygeroudis, Vasile Palade and Isidoros Perikos". Please, also note that the CAMERA READY version of your paper (including source files and pdf version) alongside the COPYRIGHT FORM should be uploaded to easychair and emailed to "perikos [at] ceid[dot]upatras[dot]gr" by 13 October 2018.
